             WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
                             -EVA DANIELS

The subject of empowerment of women has becoming a burning issue all over the world including India since last few decades. It is held that women now cannot be asked to wait for any more for equality .Inequalities between men and women and discrimination against women have also been age-old issues all over the world. Thus, women’s quest for equality with man is a universal phenomenon. What exists for men is demanded by women as well.
They have demanded equality with men in matters of education, employment, inheritance, marriage, politics and recently in the field of religion. Women want to have for themselves the same strategies of change which men have had over the centuries such as equal pay for equal work. Their quest for equality has given birth to the formation of many women’s associations and launching of movements.
The position and status of women all over the world has risen incredibly. We find that it has been very low earlier in India and elsewhere when they were treated like ‘objects’ that can be bought and sold. For a long time women in India remained within the four walls of their household. They were totally dependent on men.
A long struggle has brought women the property rights, voting rights, an equality in civil rights before the law in matters of marriage and employment (in India women had not to struggle for voting rights)

HENCE, in spite of such drawbacks and hurdles that still prevail, Indian women are no longer hesitant or apologetic about claiming a share and visibility within the family, at work, in public places, and in the public discourse.

Book Review: Send me a sign.

Book Review

Name of the book: Send me a sign.

Name of author: Tiffany Schmidt.

Pages: 384

Target audience: Young adults.

Genre: Contemporary, realistic fiction, romance.

Summary: The story follows a 17 year old superstitious girl, Mia who after being diagnosed with Leukemia decides to keep her illness a secret from all her friends except her best friend/ neighbor, Gyver.

Review: Mia is a beautiful, smart and popular high school girl who comes from a rich family. All her life she has looked for signs. A sign that she will get good grades and make it into an Ivy-league school, a sign that she should get serious with her boyfriend and so on. And now she has to start looking for a sign to tell her if she can survive cancer.

Mia was a strong lead who had her own beliefs and theories. She decided not to show any fear and be tough throughout the treatment for her parent’s sake. The way she always looked for small signs was completely relatable. I mean, many of us do that too. Even though she was naïve sometimes and made bad decisions along the way (for which I really felt like strangling her), she became a character that I understood and rooted for.

Another character that I liked was McGyver. He stood with his best friend when she desperately needed someone. He supported her throughout her illness and cared for her. He was a really sweet and pleasant character. His mother was a nice character too. She truly understood Mia and treated her like her own daughter.

Mia’s father was an understanding person. He wanted to learn everything about his daughter’s sickness. Her mother, on the other hand was different case. She liked to pretend as if Mia was not suffering from life threatening disease. She was the reason Mia didn’t share the news of her illness with her friends. Her mother thought it would be better for her ‘privacy’. She was one of the annoying characters.

The story had funny and lighthearted moments that made me laugh, as well as heart wrenching ones which made me want to sob like a baby. The way all the characters evolved throughout the book, especially Mia, was wonderful. The author did a beautiful job, creating a multilayered story with flawed characters that I understood and started caring for. Seeing the world through Mia’s eyes was an amazing experience.

Side Effects Of Having An Embarrassing Pet Name

Shakespeare had said, "What's in a name?" You have the painful answer to that!

That "Cute, weird  and Silly nickname names kept by our parents and other relatives have put us into a roller-coaster ride called embarrassment !! The very mention of the name in public brings an evil glimmer in the eyes of the listener and  awkwardness with in ourselves !! Yes, i have experienced it many times and its no less then a leg pulling spell !

If you have been trolled  with a silly nickname, you'll be familiar with these hardships:

1. You NEVER mention your nickname to anyone. But there's always that one  Chaddi Buddy  who lets the cat out of the bag.  All we can say to them is to keep it under your hat!

2. Once your friends find out about that "unusually Cute nickname" All that we can hope it sweeps under the rug ! and thats not going to happen we all know.

3.There's that one trick: Ignore the jokes and people will stop. You've tried it and it doesn't work. Instead you get used to it.

4.And here's another trick that doesn't work: Justifying it. Nobody cares what it means; why you were named so or how it's 'cute' and not 'funny.'

5. When you find somebody else with an extremely funny nickname, there sigh of relief   "foof! am not alone !"

6. When you invite your friends home, you give your siblings and parents strict instructions not to call you by "The  Embarrassing  Name"

You'll never admit it, but you do find your nickname Cute!!

 Don't you now?

Movie Review : Interstellar

Most film-makers think small or medium. Not Christopher Nolan, for whom even big or bigger won’t cut it. His new picture is his biggest: biggest event and biggest spectacle. In the age of shopping-centre cinema, Christopher Nolan builds cathedrals. His films are cold, enormous, sky-puncturing constructions, echoey with triumphant gloom, rippling with the gasps and whispers of the faithful.
Writer-director Christopher Nolan shoots for the stars with a futuristic thriller, co-written with his brother Jonathan, about mankind's search beyond this galaxy for a new home to replace a dying planet earth.Epic in scope and wildly ambitious, Interstellar doesn't quite achieve its bold vision of a love story between a father and daughter set against the vast backdrop of mankind's final roll of the dice to avoid extinction. However, even when this grand futuristic adventure malfunctions, it's a deeply engrossing meditation on the ties that bind and the endurance of those emotional bonds across space and time.
The special effects are top notch but still leave much to be desired of when compared to last years Gravity. Matthew McConaughey Anne Hathaway are in top form. McConaughey may get an Oscar nomination for his role. Other actors like Matt Damon have also excelled in supporting roles. Even the girl who plays Cooper's ( McConaughey ) daughter has acted really, sadly I don't remember her name. The movie could have been about 10 to 15 minutes shorter as there is much of father - daughter bonding in this film.
All in all Interstellar is well acted well directed , the story could have been a little more engaging and some scenes could have been edited. I would say that Interstellar is a good time if you are looking for a good film to watch this weekend or else you can waste your money on HNY.
3.5 Stars ( worth a watch ) from my side.

“Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one”

From today I refuse to be tagged to a religion or country. I'll be
just a fellow human being. No more a Hindu. No more an Indian.
Concept of country as well as religion have outlived their purpose.
Let's be one human race.

                                 Brain Drain...!!!

The migration of scientists, doctors, engineers and other technically qualified persons usually from a developing or underdeveloped country to an advanced or developed country is termed “brain drain”. It is a very serious problem for poor and underdeveloped countries, including India. Thousands of Indian scientists, doctors, engineers and other qualified persons have migrated to and are staying in other countries. Every year hundreds of our best brains make frantic efforts to leave India. The demand for passports is increasing every year, even though more and more employment opportunities are being created within the country. The steady out flow of our nation’s talent, especially those educated, at the cost of the tax payers’ money, has caused concern to the government.

Reasons-

So far as the reasons of brain-drain are concerned, one of the main reasons is the widespread unemployment and underemployment in our country. There are many scientists, doctors and engineers in our country who are unemployed. They have devoted several years of their lives to their education and have spent huge amounts of money on it- When after the completion of their courses of study and training, they find that there are no employment opportunities for them; they are overpowered by acute frustration. It is this state of affairs that forces them to go abroad.
The second major reason of this one way traffic of talent is lack of research facilities in India. Many of our best students go abroad for higher degrees or for research work, While studying for their degrees or doing research work abroad, they take up some part-time job in the field of their study or research  in order to earn some money that they need there. They have completed their studies they do not want to return». The reasons are obvious. The serious unemployment in India frightens them and they prefer to remain abroad. Idly, the better conditions of job and higher standard of living countries lure them to decide to stay on there. There are of some of such persons who when they returned to India Obtaining higher degrees or completing their research work, (Unable to get jobs befitting their qualifications and skill. They^ naturally frustrated when they found that they could neither ‘ to live a decent life with the salary that the job fetched them, II their specific skill being utilized in the best possible manner, ‘nitration forced them to leave India again. It is not as though our government is not concerned about this national problem or has not done anything in this connection. But the efforts made so far to prevent the drain of national talent have yielded little result. It is a serious problem. It has attracted even the attention of the U.N.O. The U.N. Secretary General has described the brain-drain as a valuable gift from developing countries to advanced countries and also suggested that developing nations should be adequately compensated for such drain of their talents. For quicker advancement and progress of India, it is very necessary that our scientists and skilled workers are offered the best opportunities within the
country. We cannot, otherwise, hope to stop this colossal national loss. In the context of India the problem of brain-drain has two broad aspects—means to check the outflow of our scientists from  the country, by generating employment opportunities for them within the country, and steps to facilitate the return of our  scientists from abroad.

A Change In Thought

Diwali is the one festival in India which is celebrated by all irrespective of caste, creed and religion. It is celebrated to acknowledge the victory of good over evil. But with the changing time the style of celebrating Diwali has also changed drastically.

Now Diwali celebrations mean electric illumination and bursting noisy fire crackers. This change in the celebration style has imposed many negative effects on the environment such as excessive air, soil and noice pollution, excessive power consumption and consumerism (excess consumption means excess use of raw material.

With increase in the awareness about environmental pollution amongst the public, eco-friendly Diwali was quite popular amongst the few who understand the need for environment protection. I personally feel bursting crackers is like burning your money. I along with few friends of mine thought instead of wasting money on crackers it can be used for contributing towards the welfare of the society and other poor people who are unable to celebrate the festival. Also we can have a cracker show for 2 hour or so in a common place where people can enjoy the crackers, instead of each doing at their home in a small way and making the whole city dusty with paper.

There exists a man whose amazing life should be an example for the world. This movie showcases the life of Dr. Prakash Baba Amte. A man whose contribution to society is immeasurable. A storyline showcasing an individual who was unaware of his destination but became an inspiration to the world by teaching the epitome of self actualization.

After finishing his doctor degree, Prakash's father Baba Amte, took him on a picnic to Hemalkasa, but that was not only a picnic but a turning point in Prakash's life. He became restless seeing that, on one hand people had reached the moon while here still people were living as animals. They use to hunt and sleep under the tree. Prakash went there just to treat them but became a part of them. Dr.Mandakini and Prakash loved each other from collage days. Leaving her luxurious life behind, she decided to accompany Prakash without any condition.

This is where the real story begins in the dense forest of Hemalkasa. There struggle with tribals, struggle with wild animal, struggle with Naxalites and corrupt government officials. But today after 45 years of struggle, Hemalkasa has become an example to the world. The story is unbelievable but..... it is true!
