A lunch box delivery man- Dabbawala
Who is not fond of home cooked food? and this 125 year old tradition of the dabbawalas of Mumbai help the office workers to have an appetizing meal amid their lunch time.
This tradition is unique as well as interesting. It started way back in the seventeenth century with 100 men and today has approx.5000 men delivering around 2,00,000 lunch boxes. These dabbawalas do not use any Hi-Tech management strategies its just a legacy they are following since a a century.
The process starts in the morning at 10:30am when all the dabbawalas have finished collecting 30-40 dabbas (lunch boxes) from their assigned area on their bicycles after fighting the busy roads of the city. Then all the dabbawalas gather at the local railway station. The dabbas are then categorized according to their routes and then they are taken to their destinations.Error rate here is 0.0001%.At 1:00pm the dabbas are delivered at their destinations everyday without being late.Half of the task is completed then. All the empty dabbas are collected and delivered back at their homes before 6:00pm.
While going through the official website of the Mumbai dabbawalas I came to know a lot more than what I was aware of, this process of transporting these dabbas that it changes hands about 3-4 times or even 6 times.
This is an extraordinary tradition which is carried out across Mumbai, with fresh home cooked food these dabbawalas deliver love and affection of every housewife to their loved one with lots of dedication and hard work.
Its wonderful to know about a different task carried out by different people in a different way.
